This lesson was designed for my third grade classes. Students were exposed to the art of the Papunya tribe in Australia. Students that their artwork depicted much more than lots of little dots, they were actually telling the viewer a story. Students were shown what the icons in the paintings represented and were then able to interpret the art. After students became familiar with the Papunyan icons they created a story of their own.
