Visual Narratives
In this lesson students made stories about their plaster masks that they made in the previous lesson. The booklets were premade, but we showed them how to fold a single piece of paper into a booklet without using any staples or glue. The students used colored pencils to write a story then draw pictures that describe the scene on every page. They learned the color pencil techniques of stippling, cross-hatching, and layering. The class looked at popular children's books to get inspiration. The students learned how to connect literacy and art and made the connection that art is a form of language just like writing down words.
